This is a fun project for the kids that I have done for many years. On Wednesday, we discussed how we thought pancakes were made and they learned some new vocabulary such as: recipe, tablespoon, teaspoon, griddle, batter, etc. We learned that many foods can be made using a batter. I had the kindergarteners tell me what ingredients they thought would be in pancake batter and then I wrote up their recipe, which is pictured below. During this project we discussed how we get some food from plants and some from animals such as: honey, eggs, and milk. Then we talked about how the griddle uses electricity and about how to be safe around that and a hot griddle.
On Thursday, we read through a different recipe of how to make pancakes. This recipe called them flapjacks. Each child measured the ingredients into a cup as I read the recipe to them. Then they stirred it and I helped them to carefully pour it onto the griddle. It wasn't long until the wonderful smell of pancakes filled the air. When it was time they each flipped their very own pancake over. Then the best part was to eat their creation. They thought it was wonderful, so they were very good cooks!
This PBL project is a fun way to incorporate different common core standards together. They learned standards in: math with the measuring and counting, reading and writing, and also science. It was a fun project!
This blog is for family and friends to see what their little one is experiencing on this wonderful adventure of kindergarten!

Penguin Booklets
January is a great time to discuss penguins and polar bears. In fact as cold as its been, I half expect to see one of these cold weather animals out on the playground!
I did a penguin unit and read several books to the children on this topic. Then I wrote up some facts and let the students be the illustrators. Here are the pages of one book and the covers of all of their books. Nice job kids!

Valentine's Day Party
We had our Valentine's Day party on the 12th due to Parent-Teacher Conferences and a day off on Friday. The kids had a great time playing number bingo with candy hearts, frosting and decorating a cupcake and sugar cookie, and have a tasty lunch of pizza and floats. Then they had time to open their Valentine's from their friends! It was a great time! A big thank you to the two moms that organized the party!
Mega Math for Home
We do the Mega Math program in school to help reinforce the skills that have been taught. Today we reviewed place value and showed the tens and ones for a given number. They did a fantastic job! Here is the link and a photo.

100 Days of School
We On February 3rd, we celebrated our 100th day of school! The kindergarteners have learned so much since that first day of school! I am really proud of them!
Today we did many activities revolving around that number 100. We counted 100 pennies and found other ways to make a dollar using nickels, dimes and quarters. We counted by 1s, 5s, and 10s to 100. The kindergarteners also wrote 1-100. They also attempted to be quiet for 100 seconds.

They drew what we looked like now and what we
might look like when we are 100 years old.
We also made a list of 100 things we learned in kindergarten.
I read books about 100 days of school. They drew pictures of what we could buy with $100, what they could eat 100 of, what they would want 100 of, etc. and I compiled that into their own book!
The students made a cool headband with the #100 on it. In the afternoon we shared a giant, frosted cookie to mark our special day!
